« Back to Glossary Index

Function refers to a type of role that is responsible for execution in a business or enterprise. The term can be applied with different levels of strategic sophistication. In less strategically mature organizations, function is simply a moniker for a non-executive role, job, or team with an area of expertise, such as marketing, sales, or quality. However, in companies with greater strategic sophistication in which teams Analyze Capabilities, a function is a label for a cluster of closely related capabilities. So, for example, the marketing function will be responsible for managing and improving capabilities that include market research, customer experience, market messaging, and so forth. Functions are responsible for formulating and aligning functional capability strategies. See System of Teams.
