Team Charter

Team Charter

« Back to Glossary Index

A team charter is the backbone of team culture. A Team Charter is a description of the team’s shared purpose. It is shared because the team members have discussed it, achieved alignment, and are committed to it together. It gives clarity to how the team actually operates and why it exists. There are three key elements in a Team Charter:

  1. Team Purpose Statement
  2. Target Outcomes
  3. In-Team Commitments

Team charters need to align with organizational purpose (see Figure G.17). This links to the Activating Purpose crucial conversation. See System of Teams.
